Classic Boat Painting/Varnishing Seminar at George Hazzard's Receives Rave Reviews |
|
There was a lot of build-up to this event, a lot of excitement about getting first-hand tips from the award-winning master on a full Saturday afternoon. Wasn't just a "guy-thing" either. A number of women who were equally interested were on hand.
There were several goals for this workshop, according to CBC director Chris Brown, who coordinated the event. "We wanted to have a hands-on fall workshop, of course, for starters. And we wanted it to be free for our members. That also made it a special incentive to attract new members—either new to ACBS overall or new to our chapter—because it was a much better value to take out a 2011 membership than pay just for that single day event."
The sold-out crowd at George's Eastern Shore shop attracted members from
4 states: Pennsylvania, Delaware and Virginia in addition to Maryland.
Incoming 2011 CBC President Tom Auth was extremely pleased with the
success of this event and expressed his interest in seeing more of this
kind of programming on our roster.
Kudos to Chris, George and his team at Wooden Boat Restoration for a great learning experience.

2011 Chesapeake Bay Officers Elected at Nov. 7 Annual Meeting |
Our Chapter capped off a great 2010 on Sunday, November 7 at our Annual Meeting and Election of New Officers. This year's event was held at the Prospect Bay Country Club in Grasonville to rave reviews—both for a great luncheon, orchestrated by member Julie Tompkins—and for a year of great accomplishments, despite a very challenging economy.
Outgoing President Maryann Fiaschetti recapped the highlights of her year in office:
- CBC's first "off-season" display at the Baltimore Boat Show last January.
(Event Chair: Dominic Fiaschetti) ~ This event generated several new memberships and provided great exposure for our chapter on Fox News as well as Baltimore's ABC-affiliate WMAR.
- The popular "ACBS Judging" seminar in April. (Event co-chairs: Scott Wahlberg and Dan Buckingham) ~ This workshop on the standards of ACBS judging, which we apply to Antique & Classic boats that compete at our Annual Festival in St. Michaels, was a sell-out and a model for future workshops.
- Our 23rd Annual Father's Day weekend Antique & Classic Boat Festival (Event Chair: Maryann Fiaschetti, Dockmaster: Chuck Warner, Vendor Co-chairs: John Into & Nancy Price) ~ Despite a tough economy, Maryann felt that this was one of our best shows... from the number of boat entries and attendees to spectacular summer weather. We also debuted our Arts at Navy Point concept this year to strengthen exposure for our featured artists and craftsmen.
- CBC showcased as the featured club in this summer's Antique Boat show in Clayton (Event Chair: Steve Izant) ~ Chesapeake Bay was the first chapter selected for this unique attention in what the Clayton Museum plans to be an annual feature. Three of our members' boats also won awards at that prestigious show.
- Oktoberfest in September (Tom & Marcia Auth) ~ Always a popular event, this party is a great chance to meet new members who have joined us during the year.
- Hacker-Craft's sponsorship of our display at the October Annapolis Power Boat Show (Event Chair: Chris Brown, with Steve Izant & Joe Sibilia) ~ Another "first" for our Chapter, with an impressive display of classic boats and motors at one of the largest and best-attended in-water shows in the country.
- The upcoming classic boat painting & varnishing workshop at George Hazzard's on Nov. 13. (Event chair: Chris Brown) ~ This full-day seminar is shaping up to be another "sold-out" member event.
Following Maryann's recap, CBC's Vice President of Membership,
Linda Kempin, outlined how the number of new CBC members nearly tripled
in the last 11 months. Starting the year as about the 11th-largest of
the 56 ACBS chapters, this surge could place Chesapeake Bay as high as 7th-largest
for 2011.
During the afternoon, awards and support were given on behalf of the Chapter to the Richardson Museum, the Annapolis Maritime Museum, the Chesapeake Bay Maritime Museum and Sea Scouts Ship 759.
Linda Kempin & Chris Brown (dubbed "Team Extraordinaire" ) were awarded the 2010 President's Cup for their contributions to the chapter. In addition to being VP Membership, Linda also manages Internet Marketing for the chapter. Chris has chaired the Publicity Committee since 2009 and has organized several special member events, including the CBC display at the Annapolis Boat Show.
Tom Auth, incoming President*, congratulated Maryann and the Chapter for its accomplishments and phenomenal growth this past year, especially at a time when other non-profits' membership rolls are shrinking. Tom outlined his commitment to an expanded roster of programs for 2011, with particular focus on sponsoring more summer river cruises.

Thank You to CBC Members Who Made Our Display at the Annapolis Powerboat Show a Success |
|
We had a unique opportunity this year to have a presence in the Annapolis Power Boat Show Oct 14-17 thanks to our sponsor, Hacker-Craft boats. We thank them again for the chance to share with show attendees our love and passion for the history and preservation of classic boating.
I also want to thank my Co-Chairs, Steve Izant and Joe Sibilia, for all their energy in helping us pull this together. And to Chuck Warner and Dominic Fiaschetti for their adept orchestration on site for those 4 days.
Thanks also go out to our member boat owners who contributed their boats to the display and shared insights with interested show-goers. And of course we can't forget our volunteers who staffed the booth and signed up new members.
This show is just another example of what I love about this chapter: the sense of "family,” comradery and pulling together to meet our goal.

Above: This young man was one of several kids visiting the Chesapeake Bay Chapter’s display at the Annapolis Power Boat Show Oct. 14-17 who took Chuck Warner up on his offer to climb aboard his Sid Craft class hydroplane and get behind the wheel of a real vintage race boat. Kneel, put the helmet on, squeeze the throttle and you’re (almost) vintage racing!
Below: Special thanks to our commitee members and volunteers who made this show a success. The Concours d'Elegance was Elegant Indeed |
|
Thanks to our Past-President, Dominic Fiaschetti, the Chesapeake Bay Chapter had 12 boats on display in-water at the Chesapeake Bay Maritime Museum for the 4th Annual Concours d'Elegance in St. Michaels on 9/26.
Dick and Erica Lowery, proud owners of Temma (one of the CBC's boats on display during the event), attended all the weekend's activities--including the Friday night reception--and declared it a great time.
And Dominic, when he had a spare moment, told us that if you've never attended this show before, you HAVE to go next year.
