OUR CHAPTER IN THE NEWS
- Antique & Classic Boat Display –
Take a step back in time and explore the craftsmanship and beauty of yesterday in an exhibit of vintage boats displayed by members of the Chesapeake Bay Chapter of the Antique & Classic Boat Society.
Maryland Family Magazine

- ...Members of the Chesapeake Bay Chapter of the Antique and Classic Boat Society will display a number of finely restored classic wooden boats. The boats on display will include a 1927 Chris-Craft runabout and a 1947 Ventnor Class E runabout named "Hurry Home," which got its name at the height of World War II when coming home was on the minds of soldiers and their families. Visitors can experience the restoration process first-hand and talk with ACBS members and local restorer George Hazzard of Wooden Boat Restoration in Millington.

- NEW! Antique Boats Debut at the 2010 Baltimore Boat Show
If you're a fan of classic boats, a history buff or simply appreciate fine craftsmanship, be sure to stop by this display of classic wooden boats owned by members of the Chesapeake Bay Chapter of the Antique & Classic Boat Society (ACBS). Lovingly restored powerboats, ranging in size from a small outboard to a top-of-the-line, three-cockpit runabout, give you the chance to see a bit of history up close and offer insights into the long and storied tradition of boating on the Bay.

Quarterly Letter from the President
December 2009 - I accept the Office of President for the Chesapeake Bay Chapter with great honor. We have a great team of officers and directors who have already begun placing things in motion for the upcoming year’s events. I would like to thank Dominic for his hard work and undying dedication to our chapter. He has propelled us forward into the electronics age, and there are a few things I would like to accomplish over my term that will continue the progress he started with our website and email program.
First, we have to ask your assistance in keeping our email program updated by letting us know whenever you have changes in your contact information. Please remember this is our primary mode of communication. We are working on updating our Boat Festival registration by designing an online form. This will allow participants to register and eventually pay online if they choose to do so. One thing we as a club will need to do is identify sponsors for our Boat Festival to help subsidize this effort. So if you know of a possible sponsor who might be interested, give me a call or send me an email so we can pursue it.
In my first official event, it was a joy to represent ACBS/CBC at “Christmas in St. Michaels.” This was a great weekend where members displayed their boats under a tent on the Chesapeake Bay Maritime Museum’s grounds. This annual celebration included a Parade, Breakfast with Santa, a Tour of Historic Homes, plenty of music and lots of food. And at the end of the day we had a pot-luck gathering in the CBMM boat shop, swapping stories and enjoying each others’ company. Consider putting this on your calendar for next year.
Where are we heading? Planning is underway for several 2010 events that I’m sure you won’t want to miss:
- We have been invited to participate in the Baltimore Boat Show, which takes place January 21-24, 2010. The organizers would like to showcase several of our members’ boats in the Charles Street lobby of the Convention Center. This will provide us with an excellent opportunity to enhance awareness of our Chapter, forge new relationships, and possibly increase our membership.
Mark your calendars now for another new event: July 30 – August 1, 2010. Chesapeake Bay has been invited to be the first ACBS chapter showcased in a new format for the Annual Antique Boat Show & Auction in Clayton, NY. Upon our acceptance the following correspondence was received from Charlotte Brooks, Director of Events at the Antique Boat Museum in Clayton, New York:
“Peter Mellon shared with me that Chesapeake Bay would like to be the first ACBS chapter invited as a special guest to our Annual Antique Boat Show. We thought it would be fun to incorporate a chapter into our yearly format, offering a dock to a particular ACBS chapter to bring their boats and be docked all together. It will be a great networking opportunity as well as a chance to showcase your special boats. In 2010 we will be featuring Gar Wood boats and would love to have those on campus on masse. Of course all vintage craft, designated by ACBS guidelines, qualify. I will be glad to suggest some accommodation possibilities as well as other attractions in the region to appeal to your membership. Please contact me soon and let’s get this on your calendar for July 30 – August 1, 2010. Maybe on that Friday evening we could lead a special river cruise just for your members. Thanks for your enthusiasm. I look forward to making this very special for Chesapeake Bay ACBS members.”
This is a great opportunity for us, so be sure to attend this event. Accommodations are at a premium, so book your reservation now!!!
Another new event we are considering is a second Boat Show/Rendezvous in late September or early October, possibly as an “Oktoberfest”. Detailed information will follow as it becomes available.
As you can see, we have some new venue possibilities as well as our regular local river cruises. Together we are preparing for an outstanding year of working on new events, boosting our membership and expanding our website capabilities. Be sure to visit www.chesapeakebayacbs.org on a regular basis to stay updated on our calendar of events.

CBC will be a featured event at the April 22-25 Bay Bridge Boat Show |
|
We’ll have a display at the Bay Bridge Boat Show to promote our 23rd Annual Antique & Classic Boat Festival in St. Michaels on June 18-20.
And we need…
§ 15 boats on display to represent our diverse interests in antique & classic boats and demonstrate our club members’ passion.
§ People to staff the booth for 1- or 2-hr segments and share with visitors why our annual festival is so special.
§ Items/storyboards to display in both our open space and under a pop-up, 10’ by 10’ shade canopy to distinguish the size and scope of our upcoming June Festival from this small Bay Bridge event…for example, we’ll have 110-120 boats in St. Michaels compared with 15 at Bay Bridge.
§ A few tables and chairs for our 10’ x 10’ space. So if anyone can provide those for us during the show, please let us know.
If you’d like to help, please contact:
Ø Chuck Warner at 443-250-6030 (mobile)
Ø Chris Brown at 518-281-0045 (mobile)
Ø Dominic Fiaschetti at 410-320-7129 (mobile)
More about the Bay Bridge Boat Show:
The four-day show will be held at the Bay Bridge Marina in Stevensville, MD.
Our 15 boats will be in the tree-lined parking lot in front of Hemingway’s
Restaurant, next to 5 boats from the Kent Narrows Racing Assoc. and 4 brokerage boats from Annapolis Classic Watercraft. The Bay Bridge Boat Show will provide our club with a tent and we have agreed not to sell anything.
Be sure to extend a hearty “Thanks” to Bill Donohue of Annapolis Classic Watercraft and to chapter members Chuck Warner and Chris Brown for giving us this opportunity.
We ask that everyone get behind this effort to help make our 23rd Annual
Festival in St. Michaels an even bigger success.

Live Coverage of CBC's Antique Boats at the 2010 Baltimore Boat Show |
|
The display of our Antique Boats and Motors as you enter the Charles Street lobby of the Baltimore Convention Center has proven to be a major attraction, in addition to being a new feature at this boat show. So it's no surprise that members of the Chesapeake Bay Chapter of ACBS have been busy recently doing interviews with several Baltimore TV-news stations.
Past-presidents Dominic Fiaschetti and Rick Sharpe were the first to be interviewed by WMAR, the local ABC affiliate. Then WMAR taped another segment with George Hazzard, fellow CBC member and award-winning restorer about his restoration work. These three interviews were integrated into a 30-minute feature on the Baltimore Boat Show that WMAR aired on the Boat Show's opening night at 7 pm.
Then the DC affiliate of Fox News (WTTG) did a live broadcast with CBC's Promotions Chair, Chris Brown, during its Friday morning news segment. In case you missed it, here's Matt Ackland of Fox News interviewing Chris.
Visitors attending the Baltimore Boat Show pass right by our display, whether they enter from the Pratt St. or the Charles St entrance. Everyone who visits our booth has a smile or a memory about a "boat just like that" from their childhood to share. then are those who remember that they have old outboards in their garage or basement. Others discover that CBC can put them back in touch with old friends who have similar boating interests. So it's turned out to be an enjoyable opportunity for those of us staffing this show.
For more information about show times and directions, check our calendar listings. You can also find additional video coverage of the Baltimore Boat Show on the WTTG Fox News website. |

This will be the 23rd year for this popular and important community event. Proceeds from the Christmas in St Michaels house-tour tickets, black-tie gala, and Breakfast with Santa, along with sales of a popular collector's ornament, directly benefit local non-profit organizations.

On Saturday & Sunday we'll also have a selection of antique/classic boats & motors on display in a heated tent on the grounds of the Chesapeake Bay Maritime Museum, so be sure to stop by and visit.

Possibly our Best-Ever Oktoberfest [Despite the Rain] |
|
October 2009 — Another soggy weather weekend is no deterrent for boaters, especially those of us who have enjoyed Tom & Marcia Auth's hospitality every year for this great event. Several things made this year's event really special, however, despite the lack of sunshine.
- Great food, with lots of help in the kitchen as well as on the grill
- Extra tents so we could really take the party outside despite the rain
- New faces: welcoming new members as well as guests
- "New" old boats, like John Wilmot's Matthews that he let us tour after dinner
- Great friends and conversation, and a chance to get to know each other a little better
Our next event is right around the corner. Be sure to join us for our Annual Meeting and Luncheon on Nov 7th. |

A Great Way to Take Advantage of Your ACBS Membership |

Plan to spend this Saturday, October 3, enjoying a day of food and fun at the 11th Annual Fall Boat Show and River Cruise in Wrightsville, PA.
CBC members Ray & Della Glenn attended the 2008 event with their 1959 Lyman, "Della Louise".

Patuxent River Cruise Highlights |
|
Enjoying the August Patuxent River cruise, Buddy Park's restored Grady-White
sports a new windscreen and custom deck by Howard & Cheryl Johnson
Copy by Howard P. Johnson, Jr. and photos by Chris Brown
August 2009 — On Sunday, August 16, ACBS-Chesapeake Bay Chapter members enjoyed old time boating on Maryland’s forgotten river – The Patuxent. Seven boats and many members showed up at the remote Magruder’s Landing with food and folding chairs to enjoy the hot summer sun and dazzling water scenery.
Unfortunately the Chris-Craft boats decided not to cooperate. Jim Schiller’s gorgeous ‘50 Rivera’s points would not conduct a spark, despite half an hour of frantic filing and dripping sweat. Finally, the author raced to his home and snatched a known set out of a good engine. Meanwhile Jeff Blunt arrived with his gorgeous 1940 Special Runabout 16', Sanda. Under power, the head gasket began to leak, causing the engine to miss badly. Meanwhile Tim DiGennaro, who had just tuned Howard’s ‘68 Mercury 65 to perfection, brought his wife, Wanda, and his new 14' Baracuda with a ‘55 Buccaneer outboard. A few test rides showed a faulty fuel pump. At least they got to test it, visit with friends and enjoy a great lunch.
