Join Us at the Maritime Heritage Festival in Annapolis: May 1-3 May 2009 — The Chesapeake Bay Chapter of ACBS will participate in the Maritime Heritage Festival in Annapolis again this year. Chuck Warner, who’s representing CBC on the Heritage Festival planning committee, tells us why you should attend this weekend.
Q. Chuck, you were in on the ground floor for our 1st Maritime Heritage Festival last spring, and you’ve been working tirelessly for months now to make the 2nd year a success. What do enjoy most about this event?
A. There’s something for everybody at this event, and it’s a great way to start the boating season. The heritage festival brings together a cross-section of area businesses, clubs, non-profit organizations and local municipalities for one purpose: to celebrate our maritime heritage along the Chesapeake Bay. Our area has a unique culture as well as a great history. Plus, the combined facilities of Ego Alley & City Dock in downtown Annapolis make this a perfect venue.
Q. Yes, it’s definitely a favorite location for both locals and visitors. And how does the Heritage Festival differ from our Chapter’s boat festival in St. Michaels every June?
A. Our June Festival in St. Michaels features antique boats built around the country, but the Heritage Festival mostly showcases our local history through Chesapeake Bay Boats. The oldest boat in this show, “Elf”, is an 1888 racing/sailing yacht. The types of boats represented will be quite diverse: everything from runabouts to cruisers to workboats—and even a working tug.

Q. And these workboats are indigenous to the Bay?
A. That’s right. One style in particular is called the Oyster Buyboat—there used to be ‘fleets’ of them on the Bay. They followed the skipjacks that were harvesting the oysters, and then transported the oysters to the shucking houses. One of the Buyboats scheduled to be with us this year is the P.E. Pruitt.
![]() Q. In addition to seeing these historic boats would you tell us about some of the activities planned for this 2-day event?
A. We’ll start the weekend with a kick-off party at Fawcett's on Friday at 5 pm. On Saturday the festival officially opens at 10 am, and for the next two days visitors will have an interesting variety of things to see and do:

Chuck, it sounds like your committee has done a great job creating a program that will be fun and interesting for all ages. And I understand that the event will take place rain or shine, Saturday 10-6, and Sunday 10-5. We’ll look forward to seeing you there.
